The Power of Sharing Your Abortion Story

Statistics show that one in every three women had an abortion, every one of them had a different reason for having the abortion, and each reason is valid for that woman.

Telling your abortion story can help others going through the same experience, the same decision making process, and keeping the fact quiet, also because of the same stigma and judgemental reaction that they may get.

Sharing your story while empowering others:

  1. At 19 years old, I had an abortion. We were responsible and used a condom.  It broke.  Worried and scared I went to the clinic for family planning the next day.  I got the morning-after pill.  The emergency contraceptive did not work.  I was pregnant.

I was suffering from depression, due to personal things that happened over time.  I could not bring a child into this world without being able to cope with my own life.  A friend accompanied me to the clinic.  I had to travel abroad because abortion is not legal in my country.  It was one of the most frightening things I had to do in my life.

Nothing about abortion was easy for me.  It was a difficult decision.  I am not heartless but I knew it was the right decision.  Even though it was a hard decision, it was the best decision I could make at the time and I do not regret a thing.

  1. Both of the abortions I had happened in my late 30’s, early 40’s. Both my kids were under the age of 10.  I felt annoyed when I found out I was pregnant.  It felt like a lot of trouble, a hassle.  I went to my obstetrician to get the abortions.  He did it at the office.  I never thought that I would be in need of an abortion, I was careful, but birth control can fail.

I did not want another kid, and speaking to my husband, he did not want another one, either.  We felt there was nothing more left to give another child.  Nowadays, I might wonder what these two pregnancies I terminated, would have delivered.  What kind of people they could have become.  And that is it.

Telling their stories, without being judged for their decision, could help many other women to make the decision that will work for them.  Unplanned pregnancies happen all the time.  All women that decide on an abortion are not promiscuous or careless.  You can get pregnant even when using contraceptives.
